Alton Little Theater is one of the oldest, continuously -running Community Theater in the country and set to launch it's 86th Season at the ALT Showplace in the heart of Alton, Illinois. The Theater was founded in 1933 by Dorothy Colonius, a "dreamer" and an educator who was inspired by the "little" theaters she had attended all over New England. Dorothy's friends and students were inspired by her dreams and worked tirelessly to produce entertaining shows AND raise money to build a home for the Theater group. Volunteers have always anchored the over 500 productions now mounted by the Theater group as a 501-C Non-Profit Corporation, headed by Executive Director Lee Cox and Artistic Director, Kevin Frakes and supported by a Board of Directors.
The Theater leads the Arts & Culture opportunities in Alton as a medium size business contributing some $272,000 last year to the Community. In turn, the Theater's leadership mentors and supports and is very committed to community collaborations with the entire Riverbend region.
The Theater produces six Mainstage Productions each year, with book-end big Summer Showcase Musicals AND 6-8 Extra, EXTRA Entertainment events like Concerts, Play Showcases, traveling shows and original pieces of Theater from September though May. " Production" never stops and the Theater is proud to entertain the approximate one thousand Season Tickets Holders and another 1200 guests to most productions.
The Theater was just nominated for 22 Theater Mask Awards by the Arts for Life Organization and Kevin Frakes was given a Lifetime Achievement award for his 45 years of Service to the organization. ALT was also honored to be among the TOP 5 Selections of GO Magazine as the " best place to see a Musical in the St. Louis Region". In June, Lee Cox and Kevin Frakes will accept a top honor (The Twink Lynch Award through the American Association of Community Theaters) at the National Convention in Gettysburg PA for excellence in innovation as one of the outstanding " Theaters in the Heartland".
The Theater hope to build a new State -of-The Art Performing Arts Center in the near future and increase seating capacity and comfort AND offer additional space for classroom and studio performances.
